Privacy Policy

Cookies & Privacy Policy

The Book Attic  is committed to your right to privacy. The following Cookies and Privacy Policy statement describes how we will use and safeguard the information you provide to us either directly or through our website.

What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small file, typically of letters and numbers, downloaded onto a computer or mobile device when the user accesses certain websites. Cookies are then sent back to the originating website on each subsequent visit. Any website other than the one that set up the cookie cannot read the cookie. Cookies are useful because they allow a website to recognise a user’s device.

Google Analytics

When you browse from page to page on our website the widely-used third party, Google Analytics gather data for us via cookies based on your IP address. This provides us with information such as how long customers stay on a page or how many unique visitors we have had. The data is not personally identifiable to you as only the IP address of the PC or mobile is used. We find this data very useful to understand such things as seasonal fluctuations, time spent browsing our site and which pages are most popular. We use the data to improve our website and ultimately, your customer experience.

Shopping Cart

The only other cookies you will come across are in our shopping cart. These cookies are strictly necessary for the smooth running of the cart, for example, remembering what you have added to the cart whilst you are browsing from page to page. Items added to the cart will be stored in a session cookie which is only resident temporarily in your computer memory and not written to your hard disk. It expires when you close your browser (not just the window/tab). If you check the box “Remember my name and address for my future purchases” your name and address would be stored in a persistent cookie and used to pre-fill your name and address boxes in the cart on subsequent visits, up to 90 days later. If you do not want this to happen then please do not check the box.

Blocking cookies

Most browsers allow you to refuse to accept cookies. For example:

in Internet Explorer you can refuse all cookies by clicking “Tools”, “Internet Options”, “Privacy”, and selecting “Block all cookies” using the sliding selector

in Firefox you can block all cookies by clicking “Tools”, “Options”, and un-checking “Accept cookies from sites” in the “Privacy” box.

Blocking all cookies will, however, have a negative impact upon the usability of many websites. If you block cookies, you will not be able to use the shopping cart on this website.

Deleting cookies

You can also delete cookies already stored on your computer:

in Internet Explorer, you must manually delete cookie files

in Firefox, you can delete cookies by, first ensuring that cookies are to be deleted when you “clear private data” (this setting can b e changed by clicking “Tools”, “Options” and “Settings” in the “Private Data” box) and then clicking “Clear private data” in the “Tools” menu.

Obviously, doing this may have a negative impact on the usability of many websites.

Alternatively, you may wish to visit  www.allaboutcookies.org  which contains comprehensive information on how to block or delete cookies on a wider variety of browsers.
